About this tool, examples & FAQ

Analyze text at the binary and byte level under the UTF-8 encoding standard. Inspect Unicode code points, byte lengths (1 to 4 bytes), hexadecimal byte pairs, and binary representations. Decode raw hex byte sequences directly in your browser with 100% privacy.

How to use

  1. Select your desired operation: Inspect UTF-8 Bytes or Hex Bytes → UTF-8 Text.
  2. Choose whether to view the output as an aligned text table or a structured JSON array.
  3. Toggle the binary bit breakdown display if desired.
  4. Paste your text characters or hex bytes into the input pane and click Run (or press Ctrl/Cmd + Enter).

Edge cases

Variable-Length Byte Encodings

UTF-8 encodes characters using 1 to 4 bytes: ASCII (U+0000-U+007F) uses 1 byte, European/Middle Eastern (U+0080-U+07FF) uses 2 bytes, East Asian & Symbols (U+0800-U+FFFF) uses 3 bytes, and Astral plane emoji (U+10000-U+10FFFF) uses 4 bytes.

Malformed or Truncated Continuation Bytes

When decoding hex bytes back to text, any incomplete multibyte sequence (such as a leading byte without its required continuation bytes) triggers strict fatal validation to expose encoding corruption.

Invisible and Control Characters

Control codes (ASCII 0-31, 127) and whitespace (newlines, tabs, spaces) are explicitly annotated with descriptive glyph labels so they can be identified without ambiguity.

How it works

  1. Encodes input characters into raw UTF-8 byte streams using the native Web platform TextEncoder API.
  2. Extracts individual Unicode code points using codePointAt to cleanly handle 4-byte astral plane characters without surrogate truncation.
  3. Computes exact hexadecimal and 8-bit binary bit representations for each byte.
  4. Executes client-side in a Web Worker without network requests.

Frequently asked questions

How does UTF-8 encode characters into bytes?

UTF-8 uses a prefix-based byte scheme: 1-byte sequences start with 0xxxxxxx, 2-byte sequences begin with 110xxxxx 10xxxxxx, 3-byte sequences begin with 1110xxxx 10xxxxxx 10xxxxxx, and 4-byte sequences begin with 11110xxx 10xxxxxx 10xxxxxx 10xxxxxx.

Why inspect UTF-8 bytes?

Inspecting UTF-8 bytes helps developers diagnose encoding mojibake, identify byte order marks (BOM), debug database collation errors, and understand payload sizes for storage or network transport.

Is my text data stored or tracked?

No. All analysis is executed locally inside your browser's Web Worker runtime.
