Calculation accuracyComputes exact bit and byte quantities before scaling to avoid compounding precision drift
Output representationsOverview table, text list, or JSON model
Max input size10 KB
Execution deadline2 s
Processing locationBrowser-only: data size math runs locally in a Web Worker

How to use

  1. Enter a data size with a unit (e.g. `1 GB`, `1024 MiB`, `500 TB`, `1000000000 bytes`).
  2. Select your target operation: All Storage Units Table, To Exact Bytes, To Decimal SI, or To Binary IEC.
  3. Adjust decimal precision for fraction display.
  4. Choose your preferred presentation style: Overview Table, Text List, or JSON Model.
  5. Click 'Run' or press Ctrl+Enter to convert between binary and decimal storage metrics.

Edge cases

SI vs IEC standard distinction

Clearly distinguishes decimal disk manufacturer ratings (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) from operating system binary memory allocations (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes).

Bit vs Byte scales

Supports network bit calculations where 1 Byte = 8 bits (e.g. converting 1 Gigabit into 125 Megabytes).

Comma and underscore digit separators

Accepts formatted inputs such as 1,000,000,000 bytes or 1_024_000 KB seamlessly.

How it works

  1. Extracts the numeric scalar and data unit from the input string.
  2. Multiplies by the unit's exact byte multiplier to obtain the absolute byte total.
  3. Computes corresponding SI metric units using powers of 1000 (10^3, 10^6, 10^9, 10^12, 10^15).
  4. Computes corresponding IEC binary units using powers of 1024 (2^10, 2^20, 2^30, 2^40, 2^50).
  5. Formats output numbers with thousands separators and user-selected decimal rounding.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 1 TB hard drive only show 931 GB in Windows?

Hard drive manufacturers use decimal SI units where 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows operating systems report storage using binary IEC units (1024^4 = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes per TiB) but mislabel them as 'GB' and 'TB'. 1,000,000,000,000 / 1024^3 equals approximately 931.32 GiB.

What is the IEC 60027-2 standard?

The International Electrotechnical Commission introduced the binary prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi, pebi) in 1998 to remove ambiguity between decimal (10^3) and binary (2^10) multiples of bytes.

Is storage calculation performed privately?

Yes. All conversions run on-device inside a local Web Worker without transmitting data.
