Convert CSV, TSV, or spreadsheet data into aligned, standards-compliant GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) tables with automatic numeric alignment and pipe escaping.

Key facts

Verified capabilities and limits of this utility
Markdown specificationGitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) Spec §4.10 (Tables Extension)
Column alignmentAuto-detects numeric vs text columns (:--- left, :---: center, ---: right)
Input formatsComma (CSV), Tab (TSV), Semicolon (;), and Pipe (|) with quote escaping
Max input size100 KB
Execution deadline1.5 s
Processing locationBrowser-only: table formatting runs locally in a Web Worker

How to use

  1. Paste spreadsheet data, CSV, TSV, or existing unaligned Markdown table into the input box.
  2. Select your target operation: Format GFM Table, Compact Table, or Table to JSON.
  3. Choose column alignment (Auto detects numeric right-align, or force Left/Center/Right).
  4. Toggle 'First Row is Header' to control the header and delimiter divider row.
  5. Click 'Run' or press Ctrl+Enter to generate clean, perfectly aligned Markdown tables.

Example

Convert CSV to compact GFM table

Input

Product,Price,Quantity
Widget,19.99,100
Gadget,9.50,50

Example output

| Product | Price | Quantity |
| :--- | ---: | ---: |
| Widget | 19.99 | 100 |
| Gadget | 9.50 | 50 |

Edge cases

Embedded pipe character escaping

Automatically escapes unescaped pipe characters (|) inside cell content into (\|) so table column parsing does not break.

Uneven column counts across rows

Normalizes ragged rows by padding shorter rows with empty cells, ensuring every row matches the table's maximum width.

Automatic numeric detection

Recognizes numbers formatted with currency symbols ($19.99) and commas (1,000) to right-align numeric data columns.

How it works

  1. Detects input delimiters (comma, tab, pipe, semicolon) with CSV quote parsing support.
  2. Calculates maximum text width per column for clean visual pipe alignment.
  3. Analyzes column values to determine text (left) or numeric (right) alignment.
  4. Constructs the GFM header, delimiter row (:---, :---:, ---:), and padded data rows.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) table?

GFM tables are an extension to standard Markdown that organizes data into rows and columns using vertical pipes (|) and hyphens (-). The second line serves as a delimiter row that specifies text alignment using colons (:--- left, :---: center, ---: right).

How does auto column alignment work?

In 'Auto' alignment mode, the generator checks each cell in a column. If all values are numbers (including decimal points, currency symbols, and percentages), the column is right-aligned (---:) for financial and numeric readability. Otherwise, it defaults to left-aligned (:---).

Is my table data sent to a remote server?

No. All table generation and formatting executes entirely in your browser using client-side Web Workers. No data is stored, logged, or uploaded.
