Edge cases

Comment Delimiters

Both semicolon (;) and hash (#) comment lines are preserved with their original comment characters intact.

Colon Delimiters (.properties)

Java .properties files frequently use colons (:) as key-value separators; the formatter standardizes them to clean key-value assignments.

Global (Sectionless) Keys

Key-value pairs appearing before any [section] header are preserved at the top of the file without artificial section creation.

How it works

  1. Parses input lines identifying comment prefixes, section headers, and key-value delimiter positions.
  2. Normalizes spacing around equal signs and calculates maximum key length for tabular alignment.
  3. Reconstructs clean section blocks separated by standard single blank lines.
  4. Dispatches formatted configuration text back to the editor.

Frequently asked questions

Are my configuration settings uploaded to any server?

No. All parsing and formatting happens directly in your browser using an isolated Web Worker.

Can I use this for Java .properties files?

Yes. Standard Java .properties files with colon or equal separators format cleanly.

Can this format .gitconfig or desktop files?

Yes. Git configuration files and Linux .desktop entries follow INI syntax and are fully supported.
