About this tool, examples & FAQ

Convert between Comma-Separated Values (CSV) and Tab-Separated Values (TSV) seamlessly in your browser. Configure custom delimiters (comma, semicolon, pipe), protect against spreadsheet formula injection, and copy or download the results instantly.

Key facts

Verified capabilities and limits of this utility
OperationsCSV → TSV and TSV → CSV
DelimitersComma (,), Semicolon (;), Pipe (|), and Tab (\t)
Formula ProtectionAutomatic prefix escaping for =, +, -, and @ cells

How to use

  1. Paste your CSV or TSV spreadsheet data into the input pane.
  2. Select your desired conversion direction: CSV → TSV or TSV → CSV.
  3. Configure delimiter options (comma, semicolon, or pipe for the CSV side).
  4. Toggle spreadsheet formula injection protection as needed.
  5. Click Convert (or press Ctrl/Cmd + Enter) to generate the converted tabular file.
  6. Copy to clipboard or download as .csv or .tsv.

Examples

CSV to TSV Conversion

Input

product,price,in_stock
Laptop,1200,true
Mouse,25,false

Example output

product	price	in_stock
Laptop	1200	true
Mouse	25	false

TSV to CSV Conversion

Input

name	department	level
Dana	Security	Staff
Evan	Cloud	Senior

Example output

name,department,level
Dana,Security,Staff
Evan,Cloud,Senior

Edge cases

Embedded commas and tabs inside cell data

When cell values contain commas, quotes, or newlines, CSV enclosing quotes are maintained. When converting to TSV, quotes are minimized unless tabs or line breaks occur inside a value.

Spreadsheet formula injection prevention

Values beginning with '=', '+', '-', or '@' can execute untrusted formulas or commands when imported into spreadsheet software like Excel. Enabling formula sanitization prepends an apostrophe to neutralize execution.

European semicolon-delimited CSV files

In many European regions, spreadsheets use semicolons (;) rather than commas due to comma decimal separators. You can select semicolon as the CSV delimiter to process these files without manual find-and-replace.

How it works

  1. Parses tabular records into streaming rows using PapaParse.
  2. Normalizes quoted fields, escapes, and delimiters.
  3. Applies optional spreadsheet injection sanitization to cell text.
  4. Re-encodes all fields with the target delimiter and line endings within a client-side Web Worker.

Frequently asked questions

Why use TSV instead of CSV?

TSV files use tabs (\t) as separators, which rarely appear in raw prose or numerical data. This eliminates the need for quotation marks around commas or periods, making TSV popular in Unix pipelines, bioinformatics, and database bulk imports.

Can I open TSV files in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Excel and Google Sheets can directly open .tsv files or paste tab-separated text directly across multiple cells and rows.

Is my spreadsheet data sent to any remote server?

No. All parsing and conversion runs strictly in your local browser sandbox via Web Workers. No data is stored, logged, or transmitted.
