Edge cases

Hyphenated Words and Contractions

Standard English contractions (e.g., 'don\'t', 'it\'s') and compound hyphenated terms (e.g., 'state-of-the-art') are treated as single cohesive words rather than fragmented tokens.

International Script Segmentation

Word counting utilizes Unicode character properties (\p{L} and \p{N}), ensuring proper counting across European accented characters, Cyrillic, Greek, and alphanumeric scripts.

Paragraph Boundaries with Irregular Spacing

Paragraphs are recognized by blank line intervals (two or more line feeds) regardless of trailing spaces, accurately distinguishing single-line returns from true paragraph breaks.

How it works

  1. Tokenizes text into word boundaries using Unicode-aware regular expression matchers.
  2. Separates sentences by detecting terminal punctuation (. ! ?) followed by whitespace or line termination.
  3. Calculates reading and speaking durations using standard cognitive averages (200 WPM silent reading, 130 WPM speech).
  4. Executes entirely within an isolated browser Web Worker without uploading your draft or document anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

Silent reading time is estimated using the scientific average rate of 200 words per minute (WPM) for adult readers. You can adjust this speed in the tool options.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters with spaces counts every single byte and whitespace character in your text. Characters without spaces excludes space, tab, and newline characters, which is often required for academic essays and publishing character limits.

Is my text saved or uploaded to the cloud?

No. All word counting and text analysis runs 100% locally inside your browser memory. Nothing is transmitted over the internet.
