Edge cases

XML Entity Escaping in URLs

URLs containing query parameters with ampersands (`&`), quotes (`"`, `'`), or angle brackets (`<`, `>`) must be XML escaped (`&`) to maintain XML parser validity.

Canonical and Trailing Slashes

Every URL inside a sitemap should represent the exact canonical address. Avoid mixing trailing slashes and non-trailing slashes for identical routes.

Sitemap Index for Over 50,000 URLs

When a website contains more than 50,000 URLs or exceeds 50MB in uncompressed size, search engines require splitting into multiple sitemaps coordinated by a <sitemapindex> file.

How it works

 1. Reads URLs from plain text lines, JSON arrays, or parsed XML inputs.
 2. Validates URL formatting, scheme (http/https), and detects duplicates.
 3. Escapes XML entities in query strings and pathnames safely.
 4. Builds a compliant UTF-8 XML document matching the sitemaps.org 0.9 schema.

Frequently asked questions

Do Google and search engines strictly obey priority and changefreq?

Google has stated that its crawler primarily relies on <loc> and <lastmod> timestamps, while treating <priority> and <changefreq> as optional advisory hints.

How frequently should an XML sitemap be updated?

Whenever new pages are published, significant content is altered, or deprecated URLs are removed. Automated build-time generation ensures current indexing.

Where should an XML sitemap be submitted?

Submit the full sitemap URL directly to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and declare its path at the bottom of your robots.txt file.
