Edge cases

CSS stylesheet blocks

When whole CSS blocks are detected, declarations like `font-size: 32px` are converted to `2rem` without altering surrounding syntax or selectors.

Configurable root base

Supports non-standard base font sizes (such as 10px from 62.5% html hacks or 18px for large type scales).

Parent vs root relative units

Distinguishes between root-relative `rem` and container-relative `em` or `%` based on distinct root and parent font size settings.

How it works

  1. Detects whether the input is a single scalar measurement or a CSS declaration block.
  2. Normalizes the numerical value and source unit into base pixel dimensions.
  3. Divides base pixels by the root font size (16px default) to compute `rem` units.
  4. Divides base pixels by the parent container font size to compute relative `em` and `%` values.
  5. Converts between pixels (96 DPI) and typographical points (72 DPI) using standard screen conversion factors.

Frequently asked questions

Why is REM preferred over PX in modern web design?

Using REM allows typography and layout spacing to adapt dynamically to the user's browser-level font size preferences. Hardcoded PX values ignore accessibility settings, making pages hard to read for users with vision impairments.

What is the standard browser default font size?

All modern desktop and mobile browsers default to 16px for root font size unless modified by user preferences.

Can I convert an entire Tailwind or CSS file?

Yes! Paste the CSS block and choose 'Convert CSS Code Block' or 'PX → REM'. All pixel values within style rules will be replaced with their calculated rem counterparts.
