Edge cases

HTML script safety with forward slashes

When embedding JSON inside inline HTML <script> tags, strings containing '</script>' can break page rendering. Enabling forward slash escaping transforms '/' into '\/', preventing XSS and premature tag closing.

Unicode hex sequences

Non-ASCII characters (e.g. accented letters, symbols, emoji) can optionally be converted to standard \uXXXX 4-digit hex escape sequences for ASCII-only payloads.

Control character escaping

Carriage returns (\r), line feeds (\n), tabs (\t), backspaces (\b), and form feeds (\f) are safely translated to standard JSON two-character escape sequences.

How it works

  1. Scans character code points and replaces special characters with standard RFC 8259 escape sequences.
  2. Optionally applies surrounding double quotes or hex Unicode encoding.
  3. Unescapes valid escape sequences back into their native UTF-8 representations.
  4. Runs isolated in a Web Worker without network calls.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the escape tool wrap strings in double quotes?

In JSON syntax, all strings must be delimited by double quotes. Wrapping in double quotes produces a complete valid JSON string literal ready to paste into code or configuration files.

Is escaping forward slashes required in JSON?

No, the JSON specification allows but does not require forward slashes to be escaped. However, it is strongly recommended when embedding JSON inside HTML <script> tags to avoid XSS vulnerabilities.

Are my secrets or strings sent to a backend?

No. All escaping and unescaping operations execute 100% locally in your browser. Nothing is sent over the network.
