About this tool, examples & FAQ

Encode and decode image Data URIs and raw Base64 payloads with binary magic byte sniffing, dimension inspection, HTML <img> tags, and CSS background snippets.

Key facts

Verified capabilities and limits of this utility
Encoding standardIETF RFC 2397 (The 'data' URL scheme) & RFC 4648 (Base64)
Supported graphicsPNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, and SVG images
Code snippet outputsFull Data URI, pure Base64 byte payload, HTML <img> tags, and CSS background-image
Max input size2 MB
Execution deadline2 s
Processing locationBrowser-only: Base64 decoding and binary header inspection executes locally in a Web Worker

How to use

  1. Paste an image Data URI (e.g. data:image/png;base64,...) or a raw Base64 string.
  2. Select operation: Format Data URI, Raw Base64, HTML <img> Snippet, CSS Background Snippet, or Binary Header Inspection.
  3. Optionally configure alt text or MIME type overrides.
  4. Copy generated code directly into your markup or stylesheet.

Example

Format 1x1 transparent PNG Data URI

Input

data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAYAAAAfFcSJAAAADUlEQVR42mNk+M9QDwADhgGAWjR9awAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==

Example output

data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAYAAAAfFcSJAAAADUlEQVR42mNk+M9QDwADhgGAWjR9awAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==

Edge cases

33% Base64 size expansion

Base64 converts 3 binary bytes into 4 ASCII characters, incurring ~33% overhead. Best suited for small icons and splash pixels rather than large hero imagery.

Binary header dimension extraction

Parses IHDR chunks in PNG and logical screen descriptors in GIF headers to extract width and height without full image decompression.

Automatic MIME sniffing

Identifies PNG, GIF, JPEG, and WebP signatures directly from magic bytes if the Data URI prefix is missing from raw Base64 inputs.

How it works

  1. Parses Data URI prefix and isolates raw Base64 ASCII characters.
  2. Decodes bytes via client-side binary decoder without server roundtrips.
  3. Inspects binary magic headers to verify image integrity and dimensions.
  4. Generates clean Data URIs, HTML <img> elements, or CSS background-image declarations.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use Base64 images instead of image URLs?

Use Base64 Data URIs for tiny icons, email templates, or critical CSS assets where saving an HTTP round-trip outweighs the 33% byte size expansion. Avoid Base64 for large photos because they cannot be cached separately by browsers.

Can browsers cache Base64 images?

Base64 images are cached only as part of their enclosing HTML or CSS document. They do not have separate HTTP cache headers or CDN URLs.

Is my image uploaded to an external server?

No. All image decoding, inspection, and snippet generation happens 100% locally inside your browser via a Web Worker.
